Preliminary Task

Task outline and real video:

For this preliminary task, we were given the job to re-create the first 1 minute 30 seconds of the Britney Spears 1998 classic, 'Baby One More Time'. We were given the choice for our media group to split and create 2 videos, however we decided that we could get much more done with all of us taking part in one video.

We will have to be organised and planned well to complete this video on time. This video is highly female dominated, this is a good thing for our Media group as there are more girls than boys. As this video is set in a school, this video's setting is very easy to replicate as we are based in the sixth form area within a school so props and buildings are very easily available.

Planning:

For planning how we are going to film this video, we were assigned little jobs to do to complete the planning process, for example: Richard and James did screen dumps so we could match the original video with our remake shot by shot, Kit sorted out the costumes we would need and Me, Ellie and Rachel sorted out the locations we were going to film in.

As this music video is very complex with over 60 short, quick shots, this screen dump was great for filming and editing process to know the order and what shot needed filming next. When this screen dump document was being produced I suggested that the people who were going to be in the video, needed to be noted down on which shot they were going to be in, so the people who were in the shot knew what they were doing as much as the people who were filming and directing did.

Filming:

As we worked as one big group, we were told that we all had to direct, film and act in the filming process. We all knew that we would struggle with this because of the and how some students in the group who like to take leadership of tasks, however this time, this couldn't be done as we all had to partake in all processes, rather than one or two people telling us what to do, we could think for ourselves and decided what we thought would be good for the shot including lighting, props etc. I made sure when the filming took place that I and some others were involved with all processes as I knew that if I didn't do this, our grades would suffer as people would like to take over.

I think that the shots I filmed, directed and appeared/acted in were good, as I was aware of what shot needed to be used and the angle of it. I had previously studied the video to make sure I knew the sequence, therefore my directing skills improved as I knew definitely what needed to happen in each shot. I also think that during some of the other shots I wasnt involved technically in, I helped making the people who appeared in the shots feel more at ease if they weren't used to performance. For people who were nervous about lip syncing or acting, I made sure that they were okay and offered to sing with them to make them feel more comfortable. I think this helped with the filming as it would make the filming and acting look more professional if the people who were in it felt more comfortable and confident.

Editing:

I worked with Premiere Pro again for this prelim task as I had become very comfortable with it during my AS studies. As we were such a big group that all had to contribute to the editing process, we were split up and told to develop and produce 20/30 seconds of fully edited filming. Due to technical difficulties I wasnt able to edited my own version of the filming, so I teamed up with Rachel and Kit on what they had already created.

As they had already started the editing, I found it hard to find things to edit, however as this was a simple editing process (in terms of not many special effects were needed) I was able to touch up on some of the quick short cuts that they had already created, just to help the video and lip syncing flow better. I also helped making sure the music and filming matched together with the original video as this was based on creating a replica.

Final Product:

All in all, I beleive that I contributed a lot to the filming and directing more than the acting as I already study Drama at A Level. This was good for my acting parts, however I wanted to move away from that and focus more of filming, directing and editing as I needed to learn more skills on this for the man A2 project. I think that whilst getting fully involved in all processes, I had fun with the group and didn't get too stressed about it, as others might have done because infact this was just a learning curve in terms of what the teachers expect of us when producing our own music video to a track of our choice.

Evaluation:

Overall with the finished product and other finished products I have seen from the groups, I am quite proud of how we have worked together as a team to create the filming and editing. Even though this is not as professional as the original video and this was foreseen anyway as we didn't have the technology or the huge film crew to make it like that, I think we made the best out of what we were given. Yes, we did miss a few shots out, but this was very minor and didn't really effect the video, even though this was meant to be a shot by shot replica.

The whole process opened my eyes as to how difficult it is going to be to build my own music video however hard work is all thats needed, and I am focused enough to get the perfect video out of it. I have learnt that I have to be so organised on what I need to do at what date and who needs to be involved because if not, my grade could suffer as research and planning are two of the most important parts of the process for getting the music video started.

I know that in my AS levels I wasn't confident enough to work on my own as I didn't know enough skills to achieve a decent grade or produce a video but now that I feel better with using the eqiupment and technology, I think I will be able to work on my own. I also want to do this as all the work, ideas, editing will be done by myself so I can control my own work.
